National Feeding Program Law Officially Signed By President Duterte

A law institutionalizing a national feeding program for undernourished Filipino children in public schools has been formally signed by President Rodrigo Duterte.

Act

Duterte signed the Masustansyang Pagkain para sa Batang Pilipino (R.A. 11037) last June 29.

This act aims to address the problem of undernutrition that is a common problem among children in day care centers, kindergarten, and elementary.

Law

The act is a consolidation of laws Senate Bill No. 1279 and House Bill No. 5269 which were passed on March 20, 2018.

According to the PNA,
“Under the law, the government shall provide a supplemental feeding program for day care children, a school-based feeding program for public school children from kinder to Grade 6, a milk-feeding program, a micronutrient feeding program, health examinations, vaccinations, and deworming among others.”

A part of every school should also be encouraged by the government to be turned  to a cultivation of vegetables and other plants that are rich in nutrients.

Comfortable life

A holistic and integrated approach to health and nutrition education will also be started under the law. Water, sanitation, hygiene, and an integrated nutrition education.

Along with these, behavioral transformation and social mobilization will be taking place.

A National Nutrition Information System will also be started under the law.

The law also includes the creation of a National Nutrition Information System which will harmonize all existing national and local nutrition databases to identify individuals, groups, and/or localities that have the highest magnitude of hunger and undernutrion.

Private sectors’ participation are being called.

All of these are parts of the vow of Duterte to give Filipinos a “comfortable life.”
